Gems of Jersey
Jersey is the only place in Britain where Green Lizards occur naturally, the Island representing the north-western margin of their geographical range.
While many colonies have been lost due to changes in land use, conservation efforts by the National Trust for Jersey are helping to protect and manage habitats, ensuring that the remaining populations continue to thrive.
Characteristics of the green lizard
Appearance: Males are bright green with black spots and blue throats, while females are smaller, less vibrant in colour, and have narrower heads. Females also feature distinct creamy-brown lines down their bodies, along with black or brown markings. Juvenile lizards are typically beige or duller green with two narrow stripes down their sides.
Habitat: Green lizards inhabit dunes, cliff slopes, and coastal heathlands. These areas provide a variety of vegetation types for basking, feeding, and egg-laying.
Breeding: The breeding season occurs in April and May. Males often fight fiercely to establish territories. After mating, females lay loose clutches of up to 20 eggs, which are buried in sand or hidden among vegetation. The eggs usually hatch in August or September.
Hibernation: From Autumn, Green Lizards hibernate underground in burrows and re-emerge the following spring.
Where to find them
The largest populations of Green lizards in Jersey can be found in suitable habitat near the coast in the west of the Island.
With a little patience they can often be spotted by the side of footpaths during the spring and summer months. They are quite nervous creatures and you will often hear the rustling sound they make as they flee through the undergrowth.
It's very important not to disturb them so that they feel safe in their habitats, but we do encourage you to enjoy watching from a distance and appreciating their beauty.
