Architectural splendor
Behind the early 20th-century cement render of the main house lies an imposing Georgian house dating from around 1740.
This five-bay double-pile residence, constructed in the elegant English Georgian style, boasts high-quality punch dressed aslar stonework for the principal elevation, complemented by large sash windows and a fine graduated slate roof. Once, a belvedere or cupola adorned the roof, offering breathtaking views of the valley and surrounding lands, though it has sadly been lost.
The Elms comprises a main dwelling house, a subsidiary farmhouse, a dower house, and an extensive range of outbuildings, including a boulangerie and a pressoir. Visitors can also explore a walled garden, an orchard, and approximately 80 vergees of land.
Great care has been taken to create a modern office environment while preserving the historic fabric and architectural integrity of the building. All alterations are fully reversible, with the majority of construction and joinery completed by Trust staff.
Cider orchards
The Elms proudly hosts a new cider orchard, established in November 2003 through a collaboration between the Trust and the Jersey Cider Orchard Trust.
This initiative features 109 trees, showcasing over 20 traditional Jersey cider apple varieties, which enhance the site’s historical agricultural significance.
While exploring this vibrant orchard, please note that the main house, dower house, and farmhouse are currently tenanted and unavailable for public viewing. However, there is limited on-site parking for visitors to experience the rich heritage and beauty of The Elms.
The National Trust for Jersey Headquarters
Bequeathed under the will of Nicolle John Perrée in 1975, The Elms has proudly served as the Headquarters of the Trust since 1978.
This site has been home to an important house for many centuries, with the oldest architectural remains dating back to the 16th century.
